The Story Behind:
My formal education in psychology began more than 25 years ago. I studied psychology partly because I hoped to learn how to effectively deal with my own pain. Through my studies I found a lot of interesting theories, but very little that was of practical help.
From my present vantage point, I realize I was interested in more than relief from my personal difficulties. I was curious about how the fabric of awareness is woven. I sought practical insight about what is going on within the dynamics of human experience. I sensed that within the spectrum of human consciousness there might be clues that could lead toward greater peace and happiness.
Peace and happiness weren't discussed much in my psychology classes. Actually, peace and happiness fall more into the area of philosophy. However, by the time I finished my formal study of psychology, I was less interested in reading about happiness than experiencing it. Instead of working from a text-book definition toward some theoretical realization, I wanted to know peace directly in my everyday experience.
I began studying on my own. I studied myself as much as anything. I found that writing in a journal was very helpful. I began a simple practice of meditation. My study became more of an exploration than a curriculum. I began to understand what Helen Keller meant when she said, "Life's an adventure or it's nothing at all."
My journey has taken me in many directions. There have been inner voyages, and excursions across the globe. These adventures continue to teach not only about the inner workings of consciousness, but also about the relationships shared between all people and with all living things in the world.
Within human experience there are great treasures waiting to be discovered. The work of only a few explorers is not enough to unearth them. These treasures are vast, but undiscoverable without a deep appreciation of our own joy. As more of us become involved in this exploration, the greater our discoveries shall be. The greater the peace and happiness of all humankind, the greater the ecstasy of all living beings.
